Stableford Points Scoring Query

I would like to ask the following question. I'm a member of a club and have a handicap of 26. I was always under the impression with my handicap of 26 I would receive 8 holes of 2 shots and 10 of 1. On the weekend I played in a stableford compeition. On a Par 3 holes which had an index of 6. I par'd the hole and the marker called 3 for 3. I mentioned I receive 2 shots in which he replied not on Par 3's. On the score card the hole is marked 6/33 he then preceeded to mention any hole which is higher than my handicap I receive 1 shot not two. Is this correct? Additionally I would like to know what do the larger numbers next to the stroke index mean and how can / do they affect handicap index. Thanking you in advance.

When I lived in Ireland......

When I lived in Ireland, Stableford points applied to ALL holes in the manner you describe - Hdcp of 26 gets one stroke on all 18 plus an extra stroke on the holes rated 1-8.  However, each club or club event can dicate rules that may differ from the standard, so perhaps that is a consideration.  Here is the wiki entry on Stableford points:
