putting dispute

My friend and I have been debating about our scoring of the putt, when entering our rounds. i count my putts whenever I have the putter in my hand be it on the green or not. He tells me I sould only count the putt when I am on the green. What's the score?

Me and my golfing buddy have

Me and my golfing buddy have the same argument. I feel if you putt from the fringe it is a putt, but he claims hes not on the green so it doesnt count.

Putting

The fringe is not part of the putting green any more than the first cut of rough is part of the fairway. I've seen people use their putters from 50 yards off of the green, that doesn't make it a putt (ever heard of the expression Texas wedge?) Now if you decide that your going to count putts from the fringe as true putts on the green you must remember to count landing on the fringe as a green in regulation also.

Not on the Green Not a Putt

I saw a program where Van de Velde used only a putter on 18 at Karnoosty and got a 7 but he still only 2 putted.

Technically speaking....

...any stroke that occurs on the green (not the fringe) is considered a putt.  The club you use means nothing.  And no shot that occurs off the green is considered a putt.  Now this statement is accurate for keeping true, pro-style stats.  If you choose to keep your stats differently, that's your prorogative, and doing so can actually help you isolate trouble areas.  But the stats you see advertised by the pro's is true to the word.  "greens in Regulation" doesn't count fringe approaches, and "putts per hole" only counts strokes that occurred on the actual green.  If you, as an improving player, are going to compare your stats to those of the tour player to isolate strengths and weaknesses, you must keep stats accurate, like the pro's do.  Be careful, you may find that your "putts per hole" may be less than that of the top tour pro's (1.67)...don't read too much into that though, it's probably because you only hit 25% of the "greens in regulation" compared to the pro's 70%.  Chipping up allows for alot more 1-putts, than a 170 yard 7-iron.

Putting Dispute

He is correct. A putt is counted from the green (putting surface) only. The fringe, or further away, does not count as the putting surface. The club in hand does not count for the type of shot. If you knock one in from off the green with a putter, it is a '0' putt for the hole. Hope this helps.

putt already

i think this has been cleared up but ima add my 2 stroke penalty anyway. Off the green is not a putt because the ball is not on the green, the fringe is not a green in regulation because its not the green. Thats just what it is ,if you want to keep true stats. It doesn't matter what club you use any where on the course for the shot to be called what it is but on the "green" its called a putt  period.
