GPS Range Finders

CreativeGuy4U's picture

I am considering buying a Skycaddie SG3. Any thoughts or suggestions?

A neighbor of mine has one and swears by it.

From what I can see it hasn't helped his game a lick, though.

But good information goes a long way in my book until execution catches up. I can't tell you how many times I've stood on the 150 marker, taken two steps toward the green to find I'm suddenly 128 yards away.

I'm curious - why not just spring for the SG4 and be able to hold information for more than 10 courses?

150 marker

The reason for that is because the 150 yard marker is to the center of the green, while sprinkler head yardage is typically to the front of the green.

Well...

I can only go by what the guy at the counter says and what the card says...sprinklers are measured to the center of the green where I most often play.

Not disputing your point, but just illustrating the possible virtue of a SkyCaddie.

I have an SG3 and it is a great tool, especially on a course that you are unfamiliar with. On a course you are used to playing, i don't see it helping your score, but on a course that is new to you, it will definitely keep your score down a bit. The reason being, is it will tell you distances for hazards, lay ups and carries as well as making it possible to see and avoid trouble in blind shots. Batteries last 3 0r 4 rounds for me using energizers.            E

Why am I buying the Skycaddie?

To take attention off my score and on to the technology. I have the clothes, I have the clubs, I buy a round or two of drinks and next thing you know you're a pretty neat guy. You suck, but everyone wants to play with you anyway. The reason I want the SG3 and not the SG4 is the SG3 works on regular batteries. You don't have to drag chargers around with you when you travel. I'm buying it on Ebay so it's a 2007 model so the SG4 only holds 10 too.

Ah, the battery issue,

Ah, the battery issue, yes.

I'm curious to see how it does for you. Good luck!

GPS

I bought a golf Logix GPS and love it! It tells me everything I want to know and is a bit cheaper then a sky caddie!

Golf Logix Batteries

How do the batteries work? Are they just double A? How long do they last?

I just bought a SkyCaddie

I just bought a SkyCaddie sg5 on ebay... Comes Wednesday... Kind of excited.. Do I think it will help? On some poorly marked courses, sure... More often than not, just an excuse killer.. No more yardage bullish..

I'll admit it was a ridiculous impulse buy that I will most likely hide from the lady in an effort of self preservation.. I dont have CAR GPS, which I know her direction deficientness would love.. Instead i buy a friggin golf gps.. Wierd, how the game gets you..

SG5

Where did you buy it and how much did you pay?

TheAnk's picture

SG5

$320 on the golf retail mecca, eBay...

SG3 has a lot of buttons

I borrowed a SG3 and played a round with it. It has a lot of function but also complexity. I spent a lot of time pressing buttons and changing screens. I am going to take a GolfLogix out before I buy anything.

Played with a GofLogix

Very nice. Simple to use, easy to see. Appears to be a more rugged case design too. I haven't pulled the trigger yet, but now I'm leaning towards the GolfLogix.

SkyCaddie

I have a SG3 and enjoy using it.  On most courses it is great and seems to correlate well with the laser units.  But I have noticed that on courses surrounded by large pine trees that it can give incorrect readings.  I suspect this is from multipath problems (signals bouncing off of trees instead of direct path from the satellites).  So if your home course is in a pine forest I suggest you get a laser range finder.  I have zero experience with other GPS units but believe they all will suffer this problem on courses where the fairways are closely lined with large RF reflective trees or buildings.

Igolf neo

Sorry, I posted this in the dead forum, so I'll re-post:

I have the Igolf Neo and I couldn't be happier. It's spot-on accurate and cheap. I have yet to look for a course and find they don't have it. The membership is set-up well. $35 gets you 100 courses and they are stored on your computer, so essentially you own them. I would recommend it. Just my two cents.

iGolf Neo

Just got mine and used it this week.  Accurate, great price, and the fact that you can carry it in your pant's pocket without even realizing it is there is great. If you want the basics (front, center, back) and able to add 4 more points per hole, this is a BUY!

Great on new courses

I used a SkyCaddie while on a trip in Dec in Florida, playing a lot of courses that I had never seen before.  Yardages were all very accurate - 160 yards to the back of the green...  Then I would top the shot, and know that the next shot was 145 yards to the back of the green.  They are really handy on blind shots, and avoiding hazards / finding lay-ups.  The biggest trick is trusting the unit though.  We had several spots where I didn't trust it (standing next to the 150 yard marker, it was reading 142-ish), and went a club longer, resulting overshooting the green.  The SkyCaddies measure the distance to the green front / middle / back from the angle of your approach, and the 150 marker is from it's location to the center of the green.

Skycad SG5 Update

Its pretty great, no complaints; accurate, and its really does help having the GPS.. The only thing is, and I don't mind this.. Is everyone in every foursome, ever asking for distance all the time.. I don't mind this at all, but I can see how some people would find this annoying.. I got in the habit of just telling people their distance unprovoked, works best that way.. No one has ever complained about being told their GPS distance. The yearly fee is also annoying.. And since I live in New England and golf in multi-states, you have to get the National Plan, at least last year.. Sort of steep if you asked me.. I mean, why the hell do I need yardages for Indiana or Wisconsin? I'm not even sure they golf there, I though it was all Big 10 sports and literally nothing else

iPhone GPS App

I bought an app on my iPhone and I think it does a great job. It's a bit slow at times but the cost is unbeatable at 25 dollars. Compared it with a real GPS unit and it was off by a yard or so.

Re

Wow, good enough thought just about this topic. Could please inform me how long time that will take? Just because I am going to create the economics thesis or probably this will be good to determine the buy thesis service. Thank you a lot.

Did you ever hear about freelance writing ? I want to say that your research connecting to this post is superb! Thank you for producing it!

GPS

I have done my share of research on the internet regarding these devies and the Sonocaddie seems to be the best one on the market....no issues with distances being wrong or bouncing back and forth, no annual fees (but one time fee of $30 bucks I think)....which allows unlimited courses, etc.....the basic package that comes with it only includeds uploading 5 courses....I have found it to be the best deal  (retail was $349 practically every where)....once my rewards redemption comes in the mail from Dick's, I am buying one....hope this helps
