Using the legs in a golf shot

francis.glover's picture

Hey,  Just joined this website 2 weeks ago, its very cool!  I am enjoying the discussion, keep it up.  I am coming off a knee injury and will begin to play golf again soon.  It was my patellar tendon in my left knee, so it affects my bending ability and strength in that left leg.  I can somewhat understand the issues it will bring to my golf swing (Right handed) but was wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of injury and what kind of technique issues it will affect in my game.

I guess I never thought about my knees being involved in my golf swing before the injury but now am wondering how much the knees affect a good golf swing and in what ways.

 Thanks!

Knee Injury

I'm LH, tore my right ACL, did the rehab and got back ok.. Played other sports with a brace, but was AMAZED the torque going to the driving range caused on my knee.. Never even thought of it before the tear..

It ended up screwing me up for a while, not diving into the ball, hitting off back foot to avoid pain.. But if you build the muscles back up after a while you'll just feel a little sore..

So I'd say the knee injury to oppo knee may cause you to not have proper weight shift, and lead to a lack of weight transfer leading to less distance and maybe a fade ball flight.. At least thats my experience. But its fixable, so you got that going for you, which is nice. gunga la gunga, no.. gunga galunga..

Knee Injury

I am RH and tore my left ACL in 2005. I had it reconstructed a few months after i did it and they took a section of my patellar tendon and used it as my "new"ACL. it was a while (about a year) before i got back into golf (mostly because i didn't have the time) but i can tell you that the rehab is the most important thing. I found that doing leg curls on a weight machine were great in building the quad muscle back up. It breaks down real quickly when not in use and it took a few months to get it back to normal. Hope this helps!
